How to get rid of a refrigerator
A fridge is not just big. It holds refrigerant (often called Freon), which must be removed safely before the fridge is scrapped. That is why cities have special rules for fridges and freezers.
Before you start
- Empty it and take out all food. Many cities will not take a fridge that still has food in it.
- Remove the doors (or tie them shut where your city allows it) so a child cannot get trapped inside.
- Under federal rules, the last stop in the disposal chain (like a scrap recycler or landfill) must make sure the refrigerant is recovered. Some cities ask you to show a tag or proof that it was already removed.
- Working fridges that are fairly new may be accepted by donation stores. Many set an age limit, often 8 to 10 years.
