How to get rid of a couch
A couch is the classic bulky item. It is too big for your trash cart, and most cities will only take it on a scheduled bulk pickup or at a drop-off site.
Before you start
- If it is clean and has no rips, stains or pet hair, try to donate or give it away first. Many charities will not take worn upholstered furniture.
- Sofa beds and sleeper sofas are often turned down by donation stores, so check before you haul one in.
- City bulk pickups usually want the couch at the curb early on pickup day, not days ahead. Setting it out early can count as illegal dumping in some cities.
