How to get rid of a couch in Phoenix, AZ

Book a Phoenix bulk trash appointment and set the couch out no more than 7 days before, by 5:30 a.m. on your date. The City's bulk page lists furniture as typical bulk trash, but the City Code lists furniture as not acceptable, so confirm when you book. A free transfer station drop-off (up to one ton a month) is the backup.

Watch out
City Code and the bulk page disagree on furniture

Holiday blackout (checked Oct 21, 2026): the City's scheduler blocks Halloween (Oct 31) and the 7 days after it, and does the same for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Book around those dates.

Option 1: City pickup (Appointment-based bulk trash)

Who can use it

  • For City of Phoenix residential solid waste customers.
  • Each household needs its own appointment. Do not combine piles from several households.
  • Some HOAs and neighborhood groups have a community-wide bulk date. Check the City's community appointment list before booking.

How to book

  1. Use the scheduling tool on the City's bulk trash page or call 602-262-6251.
  2. Book at least 3 business days ahead. You can book up to a year out.
  3. Cancel at least 2 business days before (link in your confirmation email, or call). On-time cancellations do not count against your four.

Couch rules

  • The bulk trash page names furniture among items "often considered bulk trash."
  • City Code Sec. 27-22 lists "all mattresses or furniture" as not acceptable for normal residential bulk collection.
  • Keep it in your single pile of 10 cubic yards or less.

Setting it out

  • Set items out no more than 7 days before your appointment. Setting out earlier violates City ordinance.
  • Have the pile out by 5:30 a.m. on your appointment date.
  • One pile, no larger than 10 cubic yards (about 17 x 4 x 4 feet), on the edge of your property parallel to the street, no more than 5 feet from the curb.
  • Keep the pile at least 5 feet from fixed objects and off water meters.

Fees and limits

  • The bulk trash page does not list a fee for the four yearly appointments.
  • Transfer stations: City residential customers can drop off up to one ton per calendar month at no charge. Beyond that, $55 per ton ($40 minimum).

Option 2: Drop it off yourself

  • Up to one ton per calendar month is free at either transfer station for City residential customers.
  • 27th Avenue Transfer Station, 3060 S. 27th Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85009.
  • North Gateway Transfer Station, 30205 N. Black Canyon Hwy., Phoenix, AZ 85085.
  • Hours: Monday to Friday 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.; closed Sunday.
  • Bring your City services (water) bill and a photo ID that matches it.

Option 3: Donate or give it away

  • Habitat for Humanity ReStores generally take furniture in gently used or like-new condition. Each ReStore is run locally and sets its own rules, and some offer free pickup of large items. Find yours with the ReStore locator.
  • The City's bulk page points to Stardust for donating usable appliances and building materials.

Donation rules are set by each charity and can change. Call before you load up.

What we could not confirm

  • The City's bulk trash page says furniture is often considered bulk trash, but the City Code section on bulk trash (27-22) lists "all mattresses or furniture" as not acceptable for normal collection. We could not resolve this. Confirm when you book.
