Getting rid of bulky items in Phoenix, AZ

Phoenix collects bulk trash by appointment only. City solid waste customers get up to four appointments per calendar year, booked online or at 602-262-6251 at least 3 business days ahead.

Holiday blackout (checked Oct 21, 2026): the City's scheduler blocks Halloween (Oct 31) and the 7 days after it, and does the same for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Book around those dates.

Appointment-based bulk trash: the basics

Who can use it

  • For City of Phoenix residential solid waste customers.
  • Each household needs its own appointment. Do not combine piles from several households.
  • Some HOAs and neighborhood groups have a community-wide bulk date. Check the City's community appointment list before booking.

How to book

  1. Use the scheduling tool on the City's bulk trash page or call 602-262-6251.
  2. Book at least 3 business days ahead. You can book up to a year out.
  3. Cancel at least 2 business days before (link in your confirmation email, or call). On-time cancellations do not count against your four.

Setting items out

  • Set items out no more than 7 days before your appointment. Setting out earlier violates City ordinance.
  • Have the pile out by 5:30 a.m. on your appointment date.
  • One pile, no larger than 10 cubic yards (about 17 x 4 x 4 feet), on the edge of your property parallel to the street, no more than 5 feet from the curb.
  • Keep the pile at least 5 feet from fixed objects and off water meters.

Fees

  • The bulk trash page does not list a fee for the four yearly appointments.
  • Transfer stations: City residential customers can drop off up to one ton per calendar month at no charge. Beyond that, $55 per ton ($40 minimum).

  • North Gateway Transfer Station, 30205 N. Black Canyon Hwy., Phoenix, AZ 85085.
  • Hours: Monday to Friday 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.; closed Sunday.
  • Bring your City services (water) bill and a photo ID that matches it.

What we could not confirm

  • The City's bulk trash page says furniture is often considered bulk trash, but the City Code section on bulk trash (27-22) lists "all mattresses or furniture" as not acceptable for normal collection. We could not resolve this. Confirm when you book.
