How to get rid of a mattress in Phoenix, AZ

Phoenix's City Code lists mattresses as not acceptable for normal bulk trash collection, and the bulk trash page does not mention them. Your best City option is a transfer station, where residential customers can drop off up to one ton a month free with a water bill and photo ID. Confirm mattresses are accepted before you go.

City pickup: not available for mattresses

Phoenix City Code lists mattresses as not acceptable for bulk trash collection, and we found no City mattress pickup.

Why

  • City Code Sec. 27-22 lists "all mattresses or furniture" among items not acceptable for normal residential bulk collection.
  • The bulk trash page does not mention mattresses either way.

Skip to your real options: drop it off, donate it, or have it hauled away (below).

Option 1: Drop it off yourself

  • Transfer stations: up to one ton per calendar month free for City residential customers.
  • 27th Avenue Transfer Station, 3060 S. 27th Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85009.
  • North Gateway Transfer Station, 30205 N. Black Canyon Hwy., Phoenix, AZ 85085.
  • Hours: Monday to Friday 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.; closed Sunday.
  • Bring your City services (water) bill and a photo ID that matches it.

Option 2: Donate or give it away

  • Habitat for Humanity ReStores do not accept mattresses or box springs (national guidance).
  • If you are buying a new mattress, ask the store whether it will take the old one away.

Donation rules are set by each charity and can change. Call before you load up.

What we could not confirm

  • Neither the bulk trash page nor the transfer station page names mattresses. We could not confirm how Phoenix handles them at the curb or at transfer stations.
  • We could not find a City of Phoenix mattress recycling program.
  • The City's bulk trash page says furniture is often considered bulk trash, but the City Code section on bulk trash (27-22) lists "all mattresses or furniture" as not acceptable for normal collection. We could not resolve this. Confirm when you book.
