Option 1: City pickup (Curbside Bulky Pickup Program (by appointment))

Who can use it

  • City of Bakersfield homeowners and renters in a single-family home, duplex, triplex or fourplex (the program flyer says apartments with 4 units or less).
  • Businesses can use the program for a fee starting at $60.75 per appointment.

How to book

  1. Call the City of Bakersfield Solid Waste Division at 661-326-3114 to make an appointment.

Mattress rules

  • Mattresses and box springs are accepted bulky items. A mattress and a box spring would use both of your two items for the three-month period.
  • Place it at the curb in front of your home before 6 a.m. on the appointment day.

Setting it out

  • Up to two bulky items, once every three months.
  • Place items at the curb in front of your home before 6 a.m. on your appointment day.
  • Leave about 5 feet of clearance around the items so the driver can reach them.
  • Shut any appliance doors securely with rope or duct tape.

Fees and limits

  • No extra charge for eligible residents: the program is covered by basic refuse fees.
  • Not accepted: propane tanks, construction debris, doors, cabinets, carpets, toilets, concrete, swing sets, spas, pool tables, large AC units, and items over 300 pounds.

Option 2: Drop it off yourself

We did not find an official public drop-off site for this item. Ask a private hauler, or check the city's page listed under Sources.

Option 3: Donate or give it away

  • Habitat for Humanity ReStores generally do not accept mattresses.
  • Bye Bye Mattress, California's mattress recycling program run by the Mattress Recycling Council, offers free drop-off at participating locations. Use the location search and call the site first. A retailer delivering a new mattress in California must offer to take back your old one.

Donation rules are set by each charity and can change. Call before you load up.

What we could not confirm

  • The City's pages don't say whether a mattress and box spring count as one item or two. Ask when you book.
  • A Kern County Public Works page says metro Bakersfield residents can set out two items each month; the City's own pages say two items once every three months. We show the City's rule.
  • We did not find a City of Bakersfield page listing a drop-off site for these items. The City points residents to Kern County Public Works for other services.
