How to get rid of a refrigerator in Kansas City, MO

Kansas City's free Bulky Item Pick-Up takes refrigerators and freezers. When you book, say the fridge contains refrigerant, because a separate truck collects those; if you don't, it won't be picked up. Empty it first.

Refrigerator rules

  • Refrigerators and freezers are accepted. Empty them of all food and debris, and remove shelves, drawers or doors if possible.
  • A separate truck handles appliances with refrigerant (CFCs or Freon). Tell the City when scheduling, or the fridge won't be collected.
  • Appliances that were not emptied or cleaned get a violation notice and are left behind.
  • Under federal EPA rules, refrigerant must be recovered before final disposal.

Setting it out

  • Place items within 3 feet of the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day, and not before 3 p.m. the day before.
  • Keep items at least 4 feet from trash and recycling carts, and not behind or next to trees, mailboxes, lamp posts or parked cars, or under low branches or wires.
  • Up to 15 items per appointment; no item over 500 lbs.
  • Not accepted: business waste, piles of small items, bags or boxes, loose building materials and lumber, closed drums or fuel tanks, yard waste and tires.

Fees and limits

  • Bulky Item Pick-Up is free.

Option 2: Drop it off yourself

We did not find an official public drop-off site for this item. Ask a private hauler, or check the city's page listed under Sources.

Option 3: Donate or give it away

  • Habitat for Humanity's national guidance: appliances should be less than 10 years old, in good working order, with all parts. Check with your local ReStore first.

Donation rules are set by each charity and can change. Call before you load up.
