How to get rid of a refrigerator in Virginia Beach, VA

Virginia Beach picks up refrigerators and freezers as bulky items for City curbside homes. The fridge must be empty with all shelves and doors removed, and you must say whether the Freon/refrigerant has been removed. Request pickup on VB311 or at 757-385-4650.

Nov. 3, 2026 (Election Day): City Waste Management offices, the West Neck Recycling Center and the Landfill & Resource Recovery Center are closed. The collection schedule is unchanged. The City also notes that Landfill & Resource Recovery Center services may be delayed by an equipment shortage (checked Oct 29, 2026).

Option 1: City pickup (Bulky/Large Item Pickup (by request))

Who can use it

  • Virginia Beach residents who receive City curbside services.

How to book

  1. Request a pickup online through VB311 (preferred), call 757-385-4650, email wastemgt@vbgov.com, or go in person to the Waste Management office at 3024 Holland Road.
  2. Request it ahead of your regular weekly trash day. The City prefers one request for several items rather than many single-item pickups.

Refrigerator rules

  • Refrigerators and freezers: empty, with all shelves and doors removed. Note whether the refrigerant has been removed.
  • Window, wall or condenser air conditioners follow the same refrigerant note.
  • At the Landfill & Resource Recovery Center, appliances with refrigerant go to the household hazardous waste area; tell the gate attendant.

Setting it out

  • Place items at the curb between 5 p.m. the day before your scheduled collection and 7 a.m. on collection day.
  • Leave at least three feet of clearance on all sides (from carts, yard waste, poles, mailboxes, cable boxes, vehicles).
  • Do not put items on the street or sidewalk, or under power lines or low tree limbs.
  • Pick up any small debris left after collection and put it in your black trash cart.

Fees and limits

  • The City's bulky item page does not list a separate charge. City curbside service is funded by the Waste Collection and Disposal fee, $30.55 per month on the City Services Bill.
  • Not eligible for bulky pickup: building/renovation materials, carpet, cabinets, doors, sinks, toilets, glass, wood pallets, cardboard boxes, bags, tires, paint, propane tanks, hazardous waste, boats, RVs, vehicle parts and computer towers.

Option 2: Drop it off yourself

  • Landfill & Resource Recovery Center, Jake Sears Road, Tuesday to Saturday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 757-385-1980. Virginia Beach residents only, with proof of residency, in a residential vehicle (no commercial vans; trailers under 10 feet only, no dump beds). Items for the landfill go into the convenience-center containers, so items must be lifted over the side; the City suggests bringing someone to help.
  • The Resource Recovery Center at the same site takes metals, appliances (including stainless-steel appliances), electronics (no CRTs) and up to four car tires per visit for free. Appliances with refrigerant go through the household hazardous waste area; tell the gate attendant.

Option 3: Donate or give it away

  • Habitat for Humanity's national guidance: appliances should be less than 10 years old, in good working order, with all parts. Check with your local ReStore first.
  • When you buy a new refrigerator, ask the retailer whether haul-away of the old unit is offered.

Donation rules are set by each charity and can change. Call before you load up.

What we could not confirm

  • The City's bulky item page says to request pickup at least three days before your trash day, but the main Trash & Recycling page says two weeks or more. Book early to be safe.
  • The City's pages give the landfill address as both 1989 and 1985 Jake Sears Road.
  • No City page we found says whether bulky pickup ever carries a per-pickup charge, or names a limit on the number of items.
