How to get rid of a TV in Houston, TX

Houston does not take TVs in heavy trash. Take it to a City Environmental Service Center (ESC), which accepts TVs and other electronics from residents with a Texas ID or City utility bill.

City pickup: not available for TVs

Houston heavy trash does not collect TVs or other electronics.

Why

  • The City's heavy trash page lists electronics as not accepted and says to take electronic scrap to an Environmental Service Center.
  • Residential Drop-Off Centers list TVs as a non-accepted item.
  • At an ESC, electronics cannot be dismantled.

Skip to your real options: drop it off, donate it.

Option 1: Drop it off yourself

  • ESC South, 11500 S. Post Oak Rd., Houston, TX 77035. Open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • ESC North, 5614 Neches St., Houston, TX 77026. Open the second Thursday of each month, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • ESCs accept computer equipment, monitors, printers, TVs and small electrical appliances. The City lists a limit of 5 large electronic items combined per visit.
  • Bring one proof of address: a current Texas-issued ID, or a current City of Houston utility bill or lease.

Option 2: Donate or give it away

  • If the TV still works, you can give it away to a neighbor or through a community exchange. Charities set their own rules for electronics, so call before you drop one off.

Donation rules are set by each charity and can change. Call before you load up.

What we could not confirm

  • The ESC page's per-visit note reads "5 PCs (+) 2 TVs 30" limit". We could not tell whether that means a 2-TV limit, a 30-inch size limit, or both. Call 311 before bringing more than one TV or a very large screen.
